I grew up in the mountains of Southwest Virginia, and those mountains—and the friendships that formed there—remain the centering force in my life. After graduating with an English degree from Clemson University (#gotigers), I landed in Columbia, South Carolina, where I’ve spent a magical 30 years as founder/creative director of brand consultancy Riggs Partners. My friend and business partner, Teresa Coles, and I co-founded a national agency network that to date has created and donated marketing services topping $24 million to nonprofits around the country. Called CreateAthon, the movement has expanded to college campuses, corporations and creative clubs across the United States and Europe.

When not staring obsessively at the Black Mountain range from a new-to-us Western North Carolina weekend place, my husband Tim and I live on Bickley’s Pond with our precious dog, Little Bit. I am wildly proud of my daughter, Eliza, a graduate of Clemson University and a therapist for children with neurodevelopmental needs; my stepson, Carson, a philosophy graduate of Swarthmore and Georgia State University; and my stepson, Alex, a graduate of Hamline University and Loyola School of Law.

I love:   white t-shirtscold beer in a frosted mug, brown leather boots, thursdays, freshly cut grass, stacks of books, dog kisses, thank-you notes, the sounds of college football, coats, new recipes, october skiesbread dipped in olive oil, texts from eliza’s friends, down comforters, the colors of hawaii, and paris. oh, do i love paris.

  1. I liked your post on March 6, but it would have had the same effect if you wouldn’t have used the word “damn”. I Corinthians 8:13.

  2. The recipe for Tapps Cornsticks was awful. They are not anything like what Tapps use to serve. Don’t know where you got this recipe but something is wrong with it.
